The Year We Really had SNOW!

As most of you know by now, we had a real snow storm this year!  Last year we had a dusting of snow, but this year we had 3-4 inches in my part of the area.  Other towns around us had as much as 7 inches this year.

Eastern North Carolina was basically "closed" over this time, mainly because we just aren't prepared for this kind of snow coverage.  The temperatures stayed below freezing for days on end, so the snow had no where to go and just became ice on the roadways.  Snow plows were able to work on the main roads, but, Eastern North Carolina is made up of lots and lots of side roads and country roads that didn't get plowed.  The Onslow County Sheriffs and Jacksonville Police were kept very busy with accidents all over the area due to icy conditions.  Businesses were closed, schools were closed.  The Marine bases were closed except for those who were necessary.  Even after the snow started melting in morning sun, the temps went back below freezing during the day.

The local news stations ran photos and videos of people enjoying the snow by sledding and building snowmen/women. In some cases kayaks were used for sledding since sleds were hard to come by around here. Where there's a will, there's a way!  Kids were having a ball, and parents moaning about another day of no school!

Here's a few photos I took around my apartment building and my balcony.  I was seriously starting to feel cabin fever!

On my balcony. I don't have any plants out there yet.
I guess it's a good thing.

Two stray black cats wandered all over for days.
Can't believe they are still alive.

Empty field and street across from my buildiing

My little Honda freezing day 3 or 4.
I went out to start it and it started right up.

The pretty sky and loblolly pines, my first day out to walk.

It's been an interesting winter for this former So. California girl.  I hope you all have a safe and happy rest of winter.

It's fun to have an occasional snowfall, as long as it doesn't last for months! We haven't had snow in Yucaipa for a while, but there have been a few winters that we had anywhere from an inch - 12 inches!! Your pictures are fun to see!!

Beautiful scenery. Reminds me of when Lisa lived in Wisconsin and they had snow when I visited. Makes everything look so clean/pure.

I'm so glad we had snow this year. We could get one more storm. It seems like the years we get more than an inch or so we end up with two good storms. :) It's so very beautiful.

So pretty and exciting to see. There is something very exhilarating about fresh snowfall. Well, my friend in Michigan doesn't agree, but for the rest of us, it's beautiful.

We just spent a long weekend at Big Bear with nothing but bare dirt and warm temps. It finally snowed the day after we came home. I have to admit I didn't miss shoveling snow this year.
